The Seven Capital Sins

I just finished reading our book for the month of February (The Seven Capital Sins). This book read a little more like a text book to me. It was short and to the point and didn't really try to tell a story.

Pride, covetousness, lust, anger, gluttony, envy and sloth were all covered. Of course, while reading, I was trying to determine which of these sins cause me the greatest trouble. Truth be told, I struggle with all of them.

I liked the way they broke down the sin of pride into a set of categories. I most identified with having a choleric temperment, although pride of ambition is up there too. Now I can see where pride really infects and feeds my other vices.

Here's a couple lines that jumped out at me:
(chapter 2, page 17) We have no time nor tast for God when we are always seeking material and temporal things.
(chapter 3, page 22) Impurity wraps itself around all our senses and through them enters our sould. It blinds us to spiritual values, darkens our minds, weakens our wills and leads us to place a created good before God.
(chapter 7, page 39) [Sloth] Its worset effect is to make us put off our return to God after mortal sin.

After each chapter deidated to a capital sin, there was a nice reflection on ways to counter this sin.

Dennis was good enough to give me a number of other booklets to read. These booklets are similar in length to those we have read thus far. I will try to read these this week to see if one or more might be good reading material for the group either next month or in some future month.
